흙을 사용한 퍼포먼스

조은지 작가의 Earth Thief 2009는 퍼포먼스를 베이스로한 다큐멘테이션 비디오 작업이다. 이 작업은 베를린이란 도시에서 이루어진 퍼 포먼스로, 이제는 소멸된 그러나 눈에 여전히 가시적인 (베를린장벽과같은) 혹은 그 현상이 여전히 진행중인 수백개의 경계선을 넘나드는 여행의 기록이다. 작가의 이 순환적인 여행동안, 그는 걸어다니며 수많은 공원과 공사장 등에서 체집한 흙을 비닐봉투에 담아 땅에 다시 흘리기를 반복하였다. 70년대생인 작가의 개인적인 역사와 연계짓자면, 작가는 이렇게 이야기한다, “경계선이란것은 언제나 저에게 체화되어 있던것 같아요.”라며 한국의 남한과 북한의 경계를 언급한다. 도시에서 나뉘어진 영역들의 매개는 새롭게 재구성하는 행위로도 보여질수 있다. 즉 작가의 지각으로 창조된 새로운 선(Line)으로 창조되는 자유로운 형태의, 예술적인 ‘영역의 재구성’이 되는 것이다.

Earth Thief 2009 by Eunji Cho, a performance, here shown as video documentation, in which the artist crossed hundreds of borders within the city of Berlin—some visible and active, others (like that of the Berlin Wall) now defunct. During her circular trip, she dragged a bag of dirt be- hind her, filling it with soil from different parks or plant beds and then letting it leak out as she walked. Connecting this work to her personal history, Cho, who was born in South Korea in the 1970s, explains, “The line is always in my mind,” referring to the border between North and South Korea. Her act of fertilizing areas of the city can be seen as an act of renewal: a free-form artistic re-zoning, where old borders are erased or muddled with new lines created in her wake.
