SCOBY(박테리아와 효모의 공생 배양물)

조은지는 지난 10월 인도네시아 자카르타로 떠났다. 전시가 시작되기 며칠 전, 그 곳에서 앨리스와 함께 배양한 SCOBY와 응고된 셀에서 추출된 음료를 가지고 서울로 돌아왔다. SCOBY(Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast)는 박테리아와 효모균이 공생하면서 두 개의 정체성이 하나로 합쳐진 배양물이다. SCOBY를 통해 조은지는 비로소 그 동안 자신이 다루어왔던 재료들(흙, 계란, 땀, 동물, 태양 등)이 공생하는 세계를 발견한다. 여기서 공생이란 단지 상리공생(mutualism)과 같은 평화로운 관계만을 뜻하지 않는다. 하나만 이득을 취하는 편리공생(commensalism), 다른 하나를 괴롭히는 기생(parasitism), 그리고 다른 하나를 파괴하는 포식(predation)까지 내포하고 있는 공생은 조은지가 그 동안 연구해온 주체의 일부로서 타자성 이론을 더 넓게 포괄하는 중요한 계기가 된다. SCOBY가 처음 작은 병에서 나올 때 분노하는 터뜨렸던 기포는 어느새 누그러졌고 이제는 스스로의 자리를 찾아 이 곳에서 또 다른 삶으로 이어가길 바란다.

SCOBY(Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast)

Cho left for Jakart, Indonesia last October. She returned to Seoul a few days before the exhibition opening, bringing with her SCOBY(Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast) which she cultivated with Alice, and a drink extracted from clotted cells. SCOBY is a culture produced through the symbiosis of bacteria and yeast. Through SCOBY, Cho finally discovered a world where the materials (soil, eggs, sweat, animals, sun, etc.) and subject (environment, women, migration, disasters, death, etc.) she has hitherto worked with have formed a symbiotic relationship. Symbiosis here doesn’t always signify a peaceful relationship such as ‘mutualism’; rather, it can also connote commensalism, where only one side benefits from the relationship, parasitism where one thrives off the other, and predation where one destroys the other.

A trajectory of Cho’s research, symbiosis becomes an important keyword which embraces the theory of otherness in a more expansive manner. The blister that popped when SCOBY first burst out of the small bottle, as if in anger, has quickly flattened, and now, if hopefully continues to thrive as another life on its own.
